Makati, Philippines - 2018

Thursday, January 11, 2018.

My flight on United got in late to Manila airport. The luggage was slow in coming through, but the security/immigration process was very quick. The in-laws had rented a car to pick me up. While I waited for him to come around, I exchanged a few hundred $ at the airport. I got 49.9 versus the 46.5 they wanted to give me in Houston. We had a little bit of trouble finding the Red Planet Hotel. You have to go down some narrow unnamed street to get to their front door.

Friday, January 12, 2018.

The next day Tristan took a Jeepney and a shorter walk to Red Planet, apparently Geneviv gave them strict rule not to let me be by myself. He then insisted we follow a similar route on our walk back rather than try Google's suggested walking route. We visited Remy's crypt after the 12:00 Mass that was supposed to be in English, but wasn't due to a one month anniversary of our lady of Guadalupe. The church was packed. Afterwards we bought flowers and candles. I took a few pictures of the church. They are renovating it again. I took some photos of us at the crypt: Danna, Hazel, Ferdie, Gail, Pinky, Tristan.

After we went to the house at P Victor Street. We then visited for a while before returning to Red Planet.

Our Lady of Guadalupe Shrine - January 12, 2018

Saturday January 13 to Friday January 19.

We repeated a similar routine of having breakfast at the Insider Restaurant adjacent to the Red Planet Hotel. Different people came to accompany my walk to the church each day. We would eat breakfast then start the walk to the church or to P Victor depending on how early they came. We would go to mass, visit with Remy and change the flowers and light candles for her, Raul and Glenn. Afterwards Hazel or Ferdie made a delicious lunch per my request for meals Remy used to prepare but never learned me how to make. They included Pork Paksiwl, then Patas, Chicken Tinola, etc. We would head back to Red Planet around 5 or 6 and stop at a 7/11 for Siopao. I tried several variations but the award goes to the Siopao Asado. It was the best!

Unfortunately the pictures I took and the selfies we did on my cell phone during these lunches were lost when my computer crashed. I cut and pasted instead of copying.

Tuesday we took a taxi to Quezon to meet attorney Chona about house transfer at a Starbucks. We got a lot of work assignments.

Wednesday, January 17, 2018.

After the Remy visit 10 of us went to the Mind Museum. We tricycled then walked. It is located in the Bonifacio area, near where Hazel works for T-Mobile. Pinky, Danna, Briana, Ralfie, Hazel, Ferdie, Tristan, Gail, Gabriel, myself made the trip. It was quite interesting and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. One of the guides did us a group picture before the first movie booth. Tristan, Gail, King, Pinky, Hazel, Ferdie, Briana, Les, Danna, Harry. The first displays were a series of movie sets where you see the same action three times. First you see the show and plan how you will fit into it. You set up your phone to record the next viewing. Then you have a third chance to perfect it. After several of these versions we moved on to the main displays.

In the first area we visited there were models representing the ten most significant discoveries but some of them didn't have labels so had to figure it out from the statue display. I didn't see any explanation as to the selection criterion or process to decide these were the ten best.

Then there were displays dealing with the diversity of the wildlife in the various regions of the Philippines. A huge display showed the various regions of the human brain. Another explained and demonstrated the Bernoulli principal. Did you know the 5th sense is balance? I'm not so sure the display on Einstein's idea of gravity was very useful for understanding. Look at the photos for other displays that caught my interests.

We then moved outside to the Dinosaurs display. They have two large animated Dinosaurs, simulated bones, hatching Dinosaurs, etc. Some "hands on" things were mostly geared to younger kids.

Thursday we went for the 50 peso ($1) haircut. I needed one bad. In addition I had him trim my mustache, eyebrows, etc so I gave him 100 pesos.

Friday night to Tuesday morning we did the Uncharted Adventure trek Ifuagao region. Making the Adventure was Tristan, Gail, Gabriel, Hazel, Ferdie, and myself. We took a taxi to the Ohayami bus terminal for 10:00 pm departure and arrived in Benaue around 9:00 am. We had breakfast overlooking the rice terrace there.

Saturday, January 20 th 2018.

After a short Jeepney ride to the start of the Awan-Igid trail we started our hike that that turned out to be much more difficult hike than we had imagined. We hiked through the jungle to the overlook for Pula. We debated doing the 4.5 hour extension to the Cambulo Village which was supposed to have better overnight accommadations than Pula, but we chose to stick to the schedule. I think we all had enough hike for first day. We thought we were going to get Chicken Tinola but had to settle for Corned Beef Tinola instead. A little boy had to climb a tree over the cliff to get the Chayote. For a shower Jody boiled some water for me so when I did the scooper shower I had warm water.

Hike to Pula - January 20 th

Sunday, January 21 st 2018.

Sunday we continued our hike to Batad Village. We arrived around 11:30. Jody went to check out the Mass schedule at the Catholic Church across town but we had just missed it. They were letting out as he arrived. So we ate lunch and continued our hike through the town to our next stay point.

We spent that night in a little more of hotel type unit instead of a hut. It had warm water. We had dinner there and Tristan insisted on getting a bottle of rice wine in spite of my telling him how bad it would be. I was right!

Hike to Batad Village - January-21 st

Monday, January 22 nd 2018.

The next morning we had an early breakfast then headed to the Tappiyah Falls at 7:00. Arrived around 8:15 and the kids played in the cold water until 9:00. Got back to or rooms and checked out about 10:30. Instead of doing the 4 he hike to Lanah Junction we did the 1.5 hour trek to Saddle Point where a Jeepney met us. The kids had requested a top loader and they rode on the top back to Banaue.

Tristan had heard that the 7th heavens cafe was good so we were dropped off there for lunch and shower. The kids all showered then went shopping. Hazel , Ferdie and I stayed behind and had more coffee. At 7:00 we caught the Ohayami bus back to Manila. Arrived at 4:30am and Grabbed a ride to the P Victor House. We rested awhile then last visit to Remy. Hazel cooked some pork bellies like the ones I tasted at 7th Heavens.

Hike to Tappiyah Falls - January 22 nd

Around 3:00 we grabbed a ride to the Marriott for my one night stay. As a Gold member I got a free upgrade to a larger room. The kids drank the coffee and wowed at the room. It has a view of the golf course. When they left, I took a long hot shower and a short nap before going down to the Man Ho Restaurant.

I met Vangie Razon, Marge De Vera-Ilarina, Vangie's son Gerome and his wife Rachel for dinner. I knew I was ordering the Peking Duck. We also had asparagus, scallops, stuffed eggplant, and rice. For dessert we had mango pudding that was excellent.

Breakfast the next day was included. They had banana chocolate waffle special. The gold member special allowed a 4:00 checkout so I hung around the room watching the golfers playing in the rain. After I checked out I stayed there drinking wine since my flight wasn't until late. Their Chardonnay was terrible so I switched to Merlot.
